DCC Sister Parish Delegation to Guatemala

On Friday, October 25, 2019, a delegation from DCC departs for Guatemala to engage in relationship with our Sister Parish in San Antonio Cunen, Quiche. The purpose of this journey is to extend and deepen our relationship with our hermanamiento—our brothers and sisters—there as the delegation engages in relationship with these our siblings in Christ and experiences the realities of their lives and cultures on religious, political, social, and economic levels.

The entire DCC community is invited to pray daily for this delegation and our hermanamiento and to participate with the delegation by following this daily devotional guide.

You can pick up a printed copy of this devotional guide in the Narthex and the church office.

Second Hour: What Christians Do, Christians Sing!

One thing we do every Sunday morning is sing hymns – but for some of us, it might be the only time and place we ever sing. Our music director, John Kendall Bailey, will provide a special workshop on hymn singing, focusing on how to connect our speaking voice with our singing voice and giving some very easy tips for improving confidence and ability – essentially, a free voice lesson!
Every summer, many of our congregation members mention how much they miss the choir. But by brushing up our congregational hymn singing, perhaps we can miss them just a little bit less when they’re away! And when they are with us, we can join our voices with theirs with strength and joy to make our weekly services even more special and meaningful. Come Sunday, October 27 following worship at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary for this special opportunity!

Pastor’s Bible Study Returns!

Pastor Eric will be re-launching the popular weekly Pastor’s Bible Study this fall! Mark your calendar for Wednesday, October 16 from 1–2:30 p.m.!

All are welcome to join Pastor Eric in a new 6-week series, Introducing the New Testament. This third part in the Exploring the Bible series shows you Jesus in three distinct ways: A man like other men, a Jewish rabbi, and the Christ of Christian faith. Then it’s on to the cantankerous Paul, the other New Testament authors, and the wild and baffling book called Revelation. We will meet for 6 consecutive weeks on Wednesday afternoons in the Spirit Room. No prior Bible experience needed. RSVP with Pastor Eric (eric@danvillechurch.org), and he will give you the information needed to purchase the Student Guide.

Be Still…

New Sermon Series, Sundays in September

Starting Sunday, September 8, we will launch into a 5-week sermon series Be Still. Throughout scripture a particular emphasis is placed on the intentional time needed to be still before God. In our Christian tradition, we have liturgical seasons where time slows down and we are invited to pay close attention to God and be still. It’s in those times that we know God. It’s in those times that our ever-moving minds stop and know and remember who is in charge, who is leading us. We remember the One who is directing our movement.
This September, I wonder, what would it look like if we intentionally moved into the church program year observing this particular stillness? What if our worship was one of slowing down, finding stillness, so there can be lasting change and direction to our future movement as a congregation. I hope you will join us this Sunday and every Sunday throughout this series in September. I’m hopeful that in intentionally setting aside this season to be still, we will come to know God more fully and God’s direction for our life together this coming year.
See you in church,
Pastor Eric

Sister Parish Delegation Trip

The DCC Sister Parish Committee invites all members and friends to consider joining our delegation traveling to Guatemala to visit our Sister Parish Community from October 25 to November 3.
We will spend 3 days in Guatemala City for orientation/educational sessions. Then we will travel to beautiful Antigua to meet up with our siblings from sister parish community from San Antonio, Quiche. We’ll spend three days together meeting, praying and playing together, including communal meals and cultural tours. When the San Antonio contingent heads home for their All Saints holiday, the DCC delegates will head to Lake Atitlan for two days before returning to Danville.
If you are interested in learning more about this delegation experience, please let us know. The cost is estimated at no more than $2,000 per person. This trip may be appropriate for teenagers traveling with a parent. And we look forward to answering any questions you may have.
Some scholarship funds may be available, please direct your scholarship requests to Pastor Eric. Questions about the trip, please contact Trish Moosbrugger.

Blessing of the Animals, September 22 at noon

As we learned during our recent Peace Village Camp, St. Francis of Assisi (c. 1181) abandoned a life of luxury for a life devoted to Christianity after reportedly hearing the voice of God, who commanded him to rebuild the Christian church and live in poverty. During his life he also developed a deep love of nature and animals and is known as the patron saint of the environment and animals; his life and words have had a lasting resonance with millions of followers across the globe. St. Francis set an example for us someone who cares for others—including nature and our non-human animal friends and companions. Each October, many animals the world over are blessed on his feast day.

And so this year, we want to offer a Blessing of the Animals ceremony to our community—here at DCC and beyond—as a way of honoring animal companions and their special place in our lives. Because we will be at Camp Caz the weekend adjacent to The Feast Day of St. Francis on October 4, we will hold this blessing on Sunday, September 22 at noon here on the church grounds. More information will be available in coming weeks.

All Church Picnic, September 8!

For the picnic, we’ll be hanging out in Kairos Hall and on the Patio. There will be fun activities for the kids and young at heart. We’ll have lots of time for connection and conversation! Wondering what to bring?

  • Something to pop on the grill for you/your family
  • Picnic/outdoor chairs if you have them
  • Drinks – we’ll have lemonade and water. Soda/beer/wine is your choice

We look forward to seeing you at the picnic!
