DCC is co-sponsoring a Mindful Self-Compassion (MSC) Training held over nine Saturdays September through November, hosted by First Congregational Church of Berkeley. MSC is a curriculum developed by Kristin Neff, PhD (UT Austin) and Christopher Germer, PhD (Harvard) that teaches self-kindness, mindful awareness, and common humanity. MSC builds on the natural compassion inside each of us that deepens with practice. Empirical research finds eight weeks of MSC practice:
- STRENGTHENS well-being, emotional resilience and immune system
- IMPROVES interpersonal relationships
- LIMITS SYMPTONS of depression, anxiety and caregiver fatigue
- MOTIVATES healthier life-style choices
The course is taught by Rev. Nancy DeNero, trained MSC teacher, and DCC’s own Cheryl D. Pierson, PT, MS and MSC teacher-in-training. MSC includes experiential exercises, discussion and practices to re-examine old beliefs and habits. Newcomers to Mindfulness are welcome.
